Flanges are usually used to increase the width of the car and expand the width of the track, even if the wheels protrude, which will make the car more three-dimensional and domineering. It is said that it can improve the stability of the car when turning and reduce the roll of the car, so it is very popular among modified car enthusiasts. However, if the family car wants to modify this thing, it is best to understand the following points first!
In fact, after reinstalling the flange, the tire may be pushed against the blade plate; because the flange is installed between the brake disc and the hub. Therefore, after the flange is installed, the tire will protrude outward by a few centimeters, and when the car passes through the speed bump or rough road, the suspension compresses the tire to move upward. In addition, the suspension of the family car is already soft.
So the suspension is compressed too much and protruding tires will easily push against the blade plate. First, the blade plate was deformed by the top of the tire, and then the tire burst. Of course, if your car's suspension is stiff enough, you don't have to worry about this problem. After the flange is reinstalled, the wear of the wheel bearings will accelerate; at the beginning of the design, family cars are designed for economy and comfort.
Replacing wheel bearings is cumbersome, so if the flange must be reinstalled, the psychological structure of the shaft head and bearing damage must be prepared in advance. At present, there are two kinds of flanges available for modification, one is to use elongated screws, the function of the flange is equivalent to a gasket, which requires high strength screws. The other is a flange with adapter screws, which is installed on the brake drum through screws, and the self-provided screws can replace the brake drum screws to fix the hub.
After reinstalling the flange, the steering gear may leak oil; because after reinstalling the flange, the wheel protrudes, and then the distance between the tire and the steering ball joint on the steering knuckle becomes larger. However, the distance between the steering ball joint and the steering gear remains the same, in this case the moment arm of the steering gear is shorter than before the modification.
Then the steering gear needs more force to push the tires to turn, which is equivalent to increasing the workload of the steering gear. In addition, many car owners are not aware of the regular maintenance of the steering gear, so in the long run, it will only accelerate the damage of the steering gear, and eventually cause the steering gear to leak oil, and almost all repair shops and 4S shops will not repair the steering gear.
Partly because it really can't be fixed, but more because it takes time and effort, and it's not profitable. Therefore, once the steering gear fails, it can basically be replaced directly. The cost of replacing the steering gear of an ordinary family car is about 5,000 yuan. If you think about it carefully, it is true that the loss outweighs the gain. When reinstalling the flange, you must buy a big brand and a special vehicle.
However, installing inferior flanges is harmful. For example, the screws are not loose and broken, but the flange is broken due to insufficient strength! At this time, the wheels will definitely fly out, and the vehicle is in danger of losing control. In places where the modified car culture is prosperous, it is very mature. However, the car modified culture in our country is still in its infancy. In order to make money, many small workshops sell forged flanges using casting technology.
Therefore, there will be a tragedy that the flange of the car will break and the tire will fall off during driving! However, the major refitting manufacturers abroad are all engaged in the manufacture of flanges and have mature testing methods and quality standards. Even according to the model of the wheel hub, a special flange is made for a special vehicle, only such modification can guarantee the performance and safety of the vehicle!
Finally, don't skimp on flanged attachments. That is to say, tire bolts and nuts are as important as flanges! If you use widened tires and the original fenders are not enough, the tires may come into contact with the fenders during steering and cause friction, which will affect driving safety. At this point, pad flanges can be added to allow the front wheels to move outward without touching the fenders. At the same time, due to the widening of the left and right wheelbases, the stability of the car can be improved.
The left and right movement of the front wheel is limited during front steering, if the shock absorption is reduced, the wider hub is easy to rub against the wheel arch during compression, if the flange is too thick, the axle will bear more force, it is recommended to use a thinner flange. In fact, after the flanges are filled, the control can be improved to avoid scratching the wheel arches and hubs.
Summary: If the braking system has not been improved, I personally do not recommend modifying the flange. The new brake disc and brake caliper of the improved braking system are lighter than the original car. At this time, add a flange to increase the gap between the hub and the caliper, and the improved large caliper will not rub against the hub. At the same time, the weight of the installed flange will not increase the unsprung mass, the quality of the flange must not be too bad, and there are strength specifications.
